Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) is the world’s leading product development partnership (PDP) dedicated to discovering, developing, and delivering affordable and effective antimalarial drugs.

MMV collaborates with government agencies, private and public sector partners, and clinical centers in malaria-endemic regions to bring lifesaving solutions to the people most affected by malaria. Our work is made possible through funding from various sources, including government agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals.

We are seeking a motivated PhD graduate for a 3-year post-doctoral fellowship opportunity to expand their scientific knowledge and skills. Working with MMV’s Director of Drug Discovery and an AI/ML expert consultant, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work within a framework of existing and new Artificial Intelligence (AI) partnerships, discovery due diligence activities, and MMV portfolio embedded AI support areas. The graduate will more specifically support dd4gh or Africabased initiatives and extension of AI modelling into areas such as hit finding, in vivo modelling and toxicology. 

The Scientist will work in an unique research and development environment of a private-public partnership organization ultimately contributing to the global effort to eradicate malaria and advance healthcare solutions worldwide. Following this experience, the fellow will be well-equipped to accept opportunities in academia, industry, or other R&D product development partnership organizations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities and deliverables associated with this position include:

  • Support dd4gh or Africabased initiatives and extension of AI modelling into novel areas for MMV
  • Generate then deploy and support new predictive drug discovery models for application in MMV drug discovery projects
  • Clearly communicate results to internal stakeholders and external partners through project reports, presentations and peer reviewed research publications
  • Contribute to due diligence activities to select new AI partners
  • Gain experience in drug discovery

Qualifications and Skills

Education and experience

  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Computational Chemistry, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated scientific excellence as measured by publications and presentations
  • Familiarity with drug discovery and the clinical development process is an asset
  • Experience working in a cross-functional matrix setting is also an asset

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in data analysis, developing or implementing advanced state of the art drug discovery AI/ML methods.
  • Fluency in English (oral and written)
  • Familiar with general AI/ML software, such as python and AI frameworks such as pytorch, Datawarrior, stardrop or equivalent
